APVMA's latest announcement regarding the proposed decision on Chlorpyrifos

24 July 2019

Dear product registrant or nominated agent,

On 24 June 2019, we announced a proposed decision to cancel the registration of chlorpyrifos products in domestic and home garden products, and in certain public spaces such as parks and footpaths. The proposed decision is to suspend the remaining high concentration products with these use patterns (the combination products) and to cancel all product registrations with these uses after three months. You are receiving this email because you are the registrant or nominated agent for a product affected by the APVMA’s proposed decision.

The suspension of label approvals for combination products (products with a combination of uses in agricultural and home garden, domestic, and/or certain public spaces) will occur after the APVMA has considered submissions received during the period of notice to holders, which expired on 22 July 2019.

The proposed cancellation of products with only home garden and domestic uses will occur after the period of notice to holders ends on 22 September 2019.

About the suspension
The APVMA will publish a Special Gazette on 25 July 2019 that will announce the suspension of unvaried combination product labels from 26 July 2019.
  • All combination products are permitted to be sold up to and including 25 July 2019.
  • The suspended, unvaried combination products must not be sold on or after 26 July 2019.
  • The varied combination products (where an application was made to the APVMA to remove the uses specified in the notice from their labels) may continue to be sold if the new, approved label consistent with the notice has been attached to the product containers.
The Special Gazette will also contain the details of a permit to allow the possession and use (but not supply) of the suspended chlorpyrifos combination products on the condition that the directions for use stipulated in the permit are followed, including that the product is not used in domestic and home garden areas, and in certain public spaces.

If your product has been suspended
If your product has been affected by the suspension, you can still make an application to the APVMA through our online portal to remove the suspended uses and keep only the agricultural uses. Your product must not be sold until the new label consistent with the notice has been approved by the APVMA and attached to the product containers.
